The recent amendments to LB 1216 enhance educational opportunities for incarcerated individuals under the age of twenty-one who have not yet earned their high school diploma or equivalency. The Director of Correctional Services is now required to ensure that these individuals have access to educational programming and necessary special education services, as mandated by law. This change matters because it supports the rehabilitation of young prisoners, potentially allowing them to gain vital skills and qualifications that could aid their reintegration into society upon release.
