The amendment to HB 1699 clarifies that if a county health officer is not reappointed, the office must be vacated and the county commission is required to appoint an interim health officer until the position is filled. It also shifts the language from "may appoint" to "shall appoint," indicating that this appointment is now mandatory rather than optional. This change is significant because it ensures continuity in public health leadership during transitions, which can help maintain health services and responses within the community.
