What changed in the latest version

The revised bill (SB 123) changes the governor's authority regarding the removal of judges. Instead of allowing the governor to merely recommend the suspension or removal of a judge, the new version requires the governor to certify the removal of certain judges, including Supreme Court justices, based on a formal legislative address. This shift strengthens the checks and balances on judicial accountability, ensuring that judges can only be removed after a clear, documented process led by the legislature. This matters because it clearly defines the process for judge removal, potentially making it more transparent and resistant to politically motivated actions.
