Plain-language change summary

The amendments to House File 189 clarify the eligibility of students enrolled in nonpublic schools to compete in athletic contests organized by public schools. The updated bill now specifies that public school districts must allow these students to participate in extracurricular activities not offered by their nonpublic institutions, provided there is an agreement in place. This change matters because it expands athletic opportunities for nonpublic school students, ensuring they can engage in competitions that would otherwise be inaccessible to them.
