The recent amendments to Senate File 2146 allow cities to impose administrative fees of up to twenty dollars on property owners for maintenance violations, in addition to covering material and direct labor costs. Previously, cities could only charge for material and labor costs and could not collect any fines. This change is important because it offers cities a bit more flexibility in managing compliance while ensuring that property owners are informed and given a chance to respond before costs are assessed. Additionally, the bill is retroactively applicable, meaning it can impact violations dating back to June 2024.
