Plain-language change summary

The updated version of Bill HB 5253 includes changes to the compensation limits for members of the board of trustees of fire protection districts, increasing the amounts they can receive. Specifically, for districts with fewer than 4 full-time paid firemen, compensation can now be up to $1,500 annually (up from $1,000); for districts with 4 to 9 full-time firefighters, up to $2,000 (up from $1,500); and for districts with 10 or more, up to $2,500 (up from $2,000). This matters because increasing these limits may help attract and retain board members in fire districts, ensuring better governance and support for local fire services.
