The recent amendment to the Clemency Board Establishment Act allows the Clemency Board in Washington, D.C., to waive the five-year waiting period for individuals applying for a pardon, under certain conditions. Specifically, this waiver can only be granted if the Board receives notice that the Pardon Attorney or the President has already approved a waiver of the waiting period. This change is important as it provides faster relief for some applicants who meet additional criteria, potentially helping them reintegrate into society more quickly. However, it also sets limitations, such as not allowing waivers for those currently on probation, parole, or supervised release.
