The bill, HB 2375, now allows municipalities to permit middle housing in historically designated areas, but only if the new buildings are designed to match the historic character of the surroundings. Previously, if municipalities did not set regulations by a specific deadline, they would have to allow middle housing without any limitations, which could lead to developments that clash with the historic charm of these neighborhoods. This change is important because it provides a balance between increasing housing options and preserving the unique character of historic areas.
