The bill establishes requirements regarding the treatment of students with unpaid school meal fees in public schools.

  • Section 15-120.04

A PUBLIC SCHOOL SHALL ENSURE THAT A STUDENT WHOSE PARENT OR GUARDIAN HAS NOT PAID THE STUDENT'S SCHOOL MEAL FEES IS NOT SHAMED, TREATED DIFFERENTLY OR SERVED A MEAL THAT DIFFERS FROM WHAT A STUDENT WHO DOES NOT HAVE UNPAID SCHOOL MEAL FEES RECEIVES UNDER THAT PUBLIC SCHOOL'S POLICY.

Schools must provide the same meal to all students regardless of their meal fee status.

  • Section 15-120.04

THIS SUBSECTION DOES NOT PROHIBIT A SCHOOL FROM SERVING AN ALTERNATIVE MEAL TO A STUDENT WHO REQUIRES A SPECIAL MEAL FOR A DIETARY OR RELIGIOUS REASON.

Schools can still provide alternative meals for dietary or religious needs.

  • Section 15-120.04

SCHOOL PERSONNEL AND VOLUNTEERS AT A PUBLIC SCHOOL THAT SERVES MEALS THAT MEET THE NUTRITION STANDARDS PRESCRIBED IN SECTION 15-242 TO STUDENTS DURING THE INSTRUCTIONAL DAY MAY NOT TAKE DISCIPLINARY ACTION AGAINST A STUDENT THAT RESULTS IN THE DENIAL OR DELAY OF A MEAL THAT MEETS THE NUTRITION STANDARDS PRESCRIBED IN SECTION 15-242.

Disciplinary actions cannot prevent students from receiving meals that meet nutritional standards.
