Plain-language change summary

The changes to SB 81 require that background checks for village public safety officer applicants be conducted specifically by the Department of Public Safety. Previously, the funding for the village public safety officer program was managed by the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development, but the revised bill shifts that responsibility to the Department of Public Safety instead. This matters because it centralizes control over the program and potentially strengthens the vetting process for public safety officers, which could enhance community safety.
