The revised version of Bill SB 81 includes amendments that clarify and expand the definitions and purposes of electric and telephone cooperatives in Alaska. Notably, it now explicitly allows cooperatives to provide "related telecommunications services," which encompass a range of electronic communication capabilities, including broadband Internet. This change is important as it recognizes the evolving nature of telecommunications and positions cooperatives to better meet modern communication needs, potentially improving service access and competitiveness in rural areas.
