Plain-language change summary

The recent amendments to Bill SB 34 clarify how the state of Alaska will implement the federal REAL ID Act. Key changes include a commitment to protect residents' privacy by limiting how personal data, especially social security numbers, can be shared or retained. This is important because it aims to balance compliance with federal regulations while ensuring citizens' rights to privacy are upheld. Additionally, it affirms that residents can still obtain non-federally compliant identification cards without facing any mandatory requirements to have federally compliant ones.
