Plain-language change summary

The new version of HB 23 establishes a dedicated Peace Officer and Firefighter Survivors' Fund under the Department of Public Safety. This fund is designed to pay medical insurance premiums for surviving spouses and dependent children of peace officers or firefighters who die in the line of duty. The changes clarify how the fund will be managed, specifying separate accounts for state and municipal employee survivors, and outline the process for determining eligibility for premium payments. This is important because it provides financial support to families of fallen first responders during a difficult time, ensuring they can maintain access to medical care.
