Plain-language change summary

The amendments to SB 185 clarify the conditions under which retired teachers can be reemployed by school districts. The changes stipulate that retired teachers must certify that there was no prior arrangement for their reemployment before retiring and must have been retired for a minimum period—either 60 days if they are 62 or older, or six months if younger. Additionally, school districts must adopt policies to demonstrate a shortage of applicants for teaching positions and publicly advertise these roles for at least ten business days before considering rehires. These changes aim to ensure that reemployment of retired teachers is done transparently and fairly, which is important for maintaining the integrity of the education system.
