Plain-language change summary

The amendment changes the responsibility for adopting New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Social Studies regarding voting from each school district to the State Board of Education, which will ensure the standards are updated alongside other curriculum updates. The amended bill also specifies that instruction for grade 12 students must now be incorporated in an appropriate place in their curriculum and includes emphasis on the importance of voting and voter registration processes. Additionally, the deleted text removed references to teaching students how to vote and the option for school districts to collaborate with election officials on the curriculum. This matters because it clarifies the authority responsible for implementing voting education and alters what specific content must be taught to students.
