The recent amendments to HB 1542 have changed the language surrounding student applications for admission to higher education institutions in North Dakota. The key change is that the term "confidential" has been removed, and the focus is now on labeling these records as "exempt." This distinction matters because it clarifies the handling of these records and reinforces that they should not be disclosed unless necessary for official duties, making it clear how personal information is protected. Additionally, the requirement for records to be destroyed upon request remains intact, emphasizing the importance of applicant privacy.
