The recently approved version of SB 294 includes additional details specifying the categories of exempt service employees in the state of Alabama. Notably, it clarifies that members of boards and commissions and heads of departments appointed by the Governor are also part of this category. This change is significant because it formalizes the structure of exempt positions, ensuring transparency about who qualifies as exempt from the merit system, which can affect hiring, promotions, and job security for state employees.
