The amendment changes the date for Alabama's second or runoff primary election in 2024 from April 2 to April 16, moving it to the third Tuesday in April. This adjustment ensures that the runoff occurs six weeks after the primary election and does not clash closely with Easter Sunday. This change is significant as it may help increase voter turnout by giving more time between elections. Additionally, it is explicitly stated that this adjustment is a one-time occurrence, meaning it won't affect future election cycles.

Under existing law, the second or runoff primary election is held four weeks after the primary election.
During the 2024 election cycle, the runoff primary election is scheduled for April 2, 2024, which is two days after Easter Sunday.
This bill would provide that only during the 2024 election cycle, the runoff primary election would be held six weeks after the primary election, which falls on the third Tuesday in April.
