The recent amendment to HB 19 allows mayors in Jackson County to participate in the Employees' Retirement System of Alabama, similar to other employees. This change ensures that these local leaders have access to the same retirement benefits, which may enhance job attractiveness and support their long-term financial security. This is significant as it acknowledges the importance of mayors in local governance and helps to level the playing field with other public sector employees.
