The recent changes to Assembly Bill 973 include the addition of a requirement for grant recipients to submit a report one year after receiving funding, detailing the effectiveness of the grants. The bill now also specifies that the Department of Health Services (DHS) will award six of the ten grants to a balanced mix of two rural, two suburban, and two urban counties. This matters because it ensures that communities of different sizes and needs are represented and that the impact of the funding can be evaluated, providing accountability for how the grants are used.
