What changed in the latest version
22 added · 61 removedPlain-language change summary
The updated version of Bill HB 790 changes how juvenile offenders are handled under the Sex Offender Registration Act. It removes a previous provision that automatically categorized adolescents adjudicated as juvenile delinquents as sex offenders upon turning 17. This means that now, a court will decide on a case-by-case basis whether a juvenile should register as a sex offender and for how long, which can lead to more tailored outcomes for young individuals. This change matters because it potentially reduces the long-term impact of a juvenile sex offense on their lives and encourages a more individualized approach to justice.
