Plain-language change summary

The changes to Senate Bill 596 primarily involve the removal of the provision that allowed courts to order costs and attorneys' fees in cases where municipal law enforcement officers experienced retaliation for reporting misconduct. This alteration matters because it may discourage officers from coming forward about improper activities if they feel they cannot recover legal costs, potentially undermining accountability within law enforcement agencies. The remaining protections against retaliation and provisions for reinstatement and back pay remain, helping to ensure some level of safeguard for whistleblowers.
