The recent amendments to SB 201 add a new section to the Unified Code of Corrections, which outlines factors that judges may consider when deciding to impose harsher sentences. The new factors include serious harm caused by the defendant, any compensation received for the crime, a history of criminal activity, obligations related to public office, and the defendant's professional reputation. These changes are significant because they provide courts with additional criteria to take into account, potentially leading to more severe penalties for offenders who meet these conditions.
