Plain-language change summary

The recent amendment to HB 5318 updated its title and clarified some key points about the requirements for municipal police chiefs. The main change is that now all municipal police chiefs must be certified law-enforcement officers or eligible for certification, ensuring better standards for those in leadership positions. However, the amendment includes exemptions for chiefs in office before the new rules take effect and for those in Class IV towns, which helps ease the transition for existing officials. This matters because it aims to improve public safety by ensuring that municipal police leaders have the necessary training and credentials.
