In plain language

Establishes a right of first refusal for tenants when rental properties are sold in Illinois.

The Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act gives tenants the first chance to buy their rental properties if the owner decides to sell. Tenants must receive advance notice of a sale and have specific timeframes to respond with intent to purchase.

What this means for you
  • Workers: This law may offer stable housing options for workers renting in Illinois by allowing them a chance to buy their residences.
  • Families: If you are a tenant, this law could give you the opportunity to purchase your home when it goes up for sale.
