Plain-language change summary

The latest version of Bill SB 596 has adjusted the penalties for organized retail theft. Specifically, it lowers the thresholds for felony classifications: now, if the value of stolen merchandise is at least $1,000 but less than $5,000, it becomes a third-degree felony, whereas previously it started at $5,000. This change aims to address the growing issue of organized retail crime by making it easier to prosecute lower-value thefts, potentially deterring this type of crime before it escalates. Additionally, it establishes a new office within the Attorney General's office dedicated to tackling organized retail theft.
