Plain-language change summary

The revised version of SB 409 has been modified to emphasize that educational institutions in Wisconsin cannot require students to affirm or adopt specific views related to race or sex. It also clarifies that while the bill prohibits certain types of instruction, it protects academic freedom, allowing instructors to conduct research, teach, and engage students in discussions about those topics. This change is significant because it balances the intent of promoting anti-racism and anti-sexism with the need to protect individual expression and academic inquiry.
