The recent amendment to Bill SB 1004 changed the minimum age requirement for obtaining a substitute teacher permit from 21 years old to 20 years old. This change is significant because it allows more young individuals, particularly college students who are enrolled in teacher preparation programs, to gain experience as substitute teachers sooner. By opening this opportunity to those who are at least 20, the bill aims to address teacher shortages and provide valuable classroom experience for aspiring educators.
