Plain-language change summary

The recent amendment to SB 165 specifies that candidates for office must collect signatures from qualified voters starting from January 1 of the election year, rather than from an earlier unspecified date. This change clarifies the timeline for when candidates can begin gathering signatures, which is important for ensuring consistency and fairness in the election process. Additionally, the amendment reinforces the requirements for petition circulators, ensuring that only those who comply with legal standards can have their collected signatures counted. This matters because it helps to maintain the integrity of the election process and ensures that candidates are properly vetted before appearing on the ballot.
