Spurrier's family was living in Bluefield, West Virginia's East End when he joined the Army in1940;in 1940;
After being wounded in combat on both hands on September 21, 1943, during a battle at New Guinea, he came back to the UnitedU.S. States and recovered from his wound in New England.
