What changed in the latest version
30 added · 30 removedPlain-language change summary
The updated bill HB 1354 prohibits the declawing of cats in Virginia, defining declawing procedures clearly and listing specific exceptions for therapeutic purposes. The definition was clarified to include terms like "onychectomy," ensuring that any surgical removal of a cat's claws is covered under the ban. This change matters because it aims to protect the welfare of domesticated cats by preventing a painful and often unnecessary procedure, while still allowing for medical interventions that are genuinely necessary for health reasons. Overall, the bill reflects a growing awareness of animal rights and welfare in legislation.
