The recently amended bill SB 797 updated the membership qualifications for the State Board of Local and Regional Jails in Virginia from nine to eleven members. Notably, it now specifies that two individuals must be employed by a public mental health services agency, ensuring better representation for mental health considerations within the criminal justice system. This change is important because it aims to strengthen the Board's expertise in addressing the needs of individuals with mental health issues who are involved with the justice system, ultimately leading to more informed decisions regarding jail operations and resources.
