The recent amendment to the Virginia Self-Service Storage Act clarifies how storage facility owners must handle defaults on rental agreements. Now, if an occupant fails to pay, the owner must notify them by mail or electronically, and they must give the occupant 10 days to address the issue before selling the stored items. Additionally, the amendment allows occupants to designate someone else to receive notices, but this does not grant that person access to the stored items unless specifically stated in the rental agreement. These changes are designed to improve communication between owners and occupants, ensuring that individuals are adequately informed before any drastic actions, like auctioning off belongings, are taken.
