The amendment to Bill SB 904 expands the definition of "firefighter" to include not only salaried firefighters and emergency medical personnel but also volunteer firefighters and volunteer emergency services personnel. This change matters because it recognizes the essential role that volunteers play in public safety and ensures they receive the same workers' compensation protections for mental health issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression, just as career professionals do. Overall, this legislation aims to provide better support for all individuals who face traumatic experiences in the line of duty.
