Plain-language change summary

The revised version of SB 440 changes the classification of hazing from a Class 1 misdemeanor to a Class 5 felony if it results in death or serious bodily injury. It also clarifies that individuals who suffer bodily injury from hazing can sue those responsible. Additionally, it provides an affirmative defense for individuals who seek or provide emergency medical attention during a hazing incident, outlining specific conditions under which such a defense is valid. These changes aim to enhance accountability and promote a safer environment by encouraging prompt medical assistance during hazing incidents.
