Plain-language change summary

The updated version of SB 5231 clarifies the requirement that no-contact orders, which are issued to protect individuals from domestic violence, must be provided in writing as soon as possible. This change emphasizes the importance of documenting these orders promptly to ensure clear communication and compliance. Moreover, the bill now requires courts to examine a defendant's firearm purchase history at arraignment, enhancing the court's ability to protect victims by ensuring that any existing orders effectively restrict access to weapons. These changes aim to strengthen protective measures for individuals facing domestic violence.
