The amendments to HB 407 introduce several important changes regarding how unclaimed bodies are handled by counties. They now require counties to provide a reasonable opportunity for legal next of kin to claim these bodies, define who qualifies as legal next of kin, and allow counties to manage the burial or cremation process and associated costs. Additionally, the timeframe for retaining cremated remains has been adjusted, and counties will be able to seek reimbursement for burial or cremation expenses from the deceased's estate. These changes aim to ensure respectful treatment of unclaimed bodies and clarify the responsibilities of counties and families.
