Plain-language change summary

The amendments to Bill SB 33 clarify the procedures for establishing commissioning agreements between New Mexico law enforcement and Indian nations, tribes, and pueblos, as well as Bureau of Indian Affairs officers. It now explicitly states that these officers, once certified by the New Mexico law enforcement academy, will be recognized as New Mexico peace officers with the authority to enforce state laws. This change is important because it formalizes the process and outlines the scope of authority, which may help improve collaboration between state and tribal law enforcement.
