The recent amendments to SB 989 allow Spotsylvania County to impose an additional transient occupancy tax of up to four percent, similar to earlier provisions. However, the changes specify that any revenue gained from this tax must be used solely for tourism-related purposes, such as marketing initiatives that encourage visitors to the county. Additionally, if there are no local tourism organizations, the county must hold a public hearing to discuss how to best attract tourists. These modifications are important as they ensure the tax revenue directly benefits local tourism efforts, promoting economic growth in the area.
