Plain-language change summary

The recent amendment to Senate Bill 484 expands the existing Michigan border permit to include additional highway segments for transporting oversize or overweight vehicles. It adds specific routes, such as certain sections of STH 70, USH 141, and STH 32, making it easier for trucks carrying forest products to operate between Wisconsin and Michigan. This change is important as it supports the logging industry by improving access to transport routes, potentially enhancing economic activity in the region.

relating to:
permits for certain oversize or overweight vehicles transporting forest products.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau Under current law, with limited exceptions, no person may operate on a highway any vehicle or combination of vehicles that exceeds certain statutory limits on size, weight, or load unless that person possesses a permit issued by the Department of Transportation.
Currently, DOT may issue an annual or consecutive month permit for an oversize or overweight vehicle to transport loads within 11 miles of the Wisconsin-Michigan state line and on specifically designated highways, if the vehicle does not violate length or weight limitations under Michigan law (commonly known as the Michigan border permit).
This bill adds the following highway segments to the Michigan border permit:
