On Syria's Latest Chemical Weapons Attacks
I write to you today as your constituent to ask for your urgent leadership by issuing a statement to unequivocally condemn the Assad regime's latest uses of chemical weapons against the Syrian people.
In the last month alone, the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons at least four times, with the most recent incidents occurring just last Thursday on Douma City and yesterday on Saraqib. In the wake of international inaction and even more recently, the Russian veto to end the mandate of the Joint Investigative Mechanism--created by the United Nations to hold perpetrators of chemical weapons attacks accountable--the Syrian regime has committed such attacks with complete impunity.
Now, more than ever, we need our leaders to publicly take a stance against the commission of war crimes and crimes against humanity. In the aftermath of the Holocaust, we pledged "Never Again," I urge you to honor this global commitment today and speak out against the use of chemical weapons against the Syrian people.
I would be more than happy to provide additional information should your office need it. I look forward to remaining closely engaged with you on this issue.
On the Chemical Weapons Attacks in Syria
I am writing to urge your leadership by issuing a statement to unequivocally condemn the Assad regime's use of chemical weapons against the Syrian people.
In the last month, the Syrian regime has targeted Syrian civilians with chemical weapons on at least four occasions, the most recent of them happening last Thursday on Douma City and yesterday on Saraqib. Such attacks have occurred with absolute impunity; estimates show that through 2015, at least 161 chemical weapons attacks had been perpetrated against the Syrian people. This egregious trend has only continued.
With the recent Russian veto of the mandate of the Joint Investigative Mechanism, an entity meant to hold perpetrators of chemical weapons attacks accountable, the leadership of American decision-makers is more vital than ever.
I urge you to add your voice to those speaking out against the commission of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
I would be more than happy to provide your office with additional information and look forward to remaining engaged on this issue.
