Please don't appeal the SANDAG 2050 RTP Ruling
In 2012, the SANDAG board chose to appeal the lower court's ruling that the SANDAG 2050 Regional Transportation Plan didn't meet the state mandate to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The board made this decision ignoring many community voices urging them not to do so. They did, and that gamble has cost San Diegans valuable time and money as they continue to wait for their elected leaders to act. I, like many San Diegans ask that you do not appeal the Appeals Court's ruling on the SANDAG RTP. Instead, now is time to listen and act to your your community's need to create true transportation choices in the San Diego region. San Diego does not need any more freeways. San Diego needs a robust, world-class transit network, a robust, world-class bicycle infrastructure network, and the investments and political will to ensure that these networks get built so that people will have a choice to travel besides the automobile. Creating more freeways will ensure that this region fails to meet the state mandate to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. Please do not appeal the ruling, instead please work together with the SANDAG staff to create a new Regional Transportation Plan - one that offers San Diegans a true choice in transportation. Let's prioritize transit, bicycling and walking. You are leaders, please demonstrate your leadership with straightforward governance and not wasting any more public funds with additional litigation. We need a better Regional Transportation Plan now - for our health, our economy, our environment, and this region's livability and quality of life.
