Take Action to End Gerrymandering in Illinois
A recent poll by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute found that 72 percent of Illinois voters favor an independent commission to create legislative districts. I add my voice to the Illinois Redistricting Collaborative, a robust coalition of organizations advocating for redistricting reform, and ask that you cosponsor the bipartisan Fair Maps Amendment, HJRCA43/SJRCA26. The Fair Maps initiative would amend the Illinois constitution and create an independent commission to draw legislative and congressional districts in compliance with state and federal law. The amendment would also enhance transparency and public participation in the map-making process. The way district lines are drawn matter. Gerrymandered maps protect incumbents, reduce the number of competitive elections, and unnecessarily divide up our communities. I've seen what gerrymandered maps have done to our state. Gridlock and refusal to compromise has stopped critical bills from passing, and eroded voter confidence in the political process. The impact of this mistrust is directly tied to state's economic troubles. Entrepreneurs are reluctant to expand when they are not confident in their government or ability to weigh in on policies that impact their businesses. This is why small business owners of all political stripes are taking up the fight to end gerrymandering in Illinois. As your constituent and a supporter of the Illinois Redistricting Collaborative, I stand with the undersigned organizations in support of HJRCA43/SJRCA26, and ask that you stand with us in this critical fight.
