Vote NO on H.R.4909
I oppose H.R.4909! The lives of our kids and teachers are at least as important as politicians, judges, and celebrities. Instead of implementing real security, H.R.4909 would: - Eliminate funding for "the placement and use of metal detectors and other deterrent measures, at schools and on school grounds" and make schools less safe by eliminating funding for real, effective security measures to keep killers OUT of schools in the first place! - Mandate anonymous reporting systems, "including mobile telephone applications, hotlines, and internet websites," that government can IGNORE and FAIL to follow up on like they did in Parkland, Florida -- and that anti-gun people and groups could abuse to "SWAT" law-abiding gun owners and their families. - Create new subgrants that could be used to fund gun control initiatives with taxpayer dollars. Additionally, there is talk that FixNICS will be included in H.R. 4909. The “Fix NICS” legislation as contained in H.R.38 and passed by the House last December is deeply concerning. To the extent that H.R. 4909 may, at some point, contain the same or similar defects, we similarly object and encourage the House to take up appropriate remedial amendments to ensure that: - Any background-check legislation should include a provision whereby people can review their firearms eligibility or disability status—and correct any defects in their record—before unknowingly participating in an unlawful purchase or transfer. - Any background-check legislation must provide strict, enforceable safeguards against false or inaccurate reporting of data, including by state officials or agencies that base their submissions on state statutes inconsistent with Federal laws and intent. - Any background-check legislation must include clear bright-line limits on executive powers so as to prevent abuses by officials and bureaucrats who do not like guns, gun owners, or Second Amendment rights. - Any background-check legislation should ensure that the Federal civil rights restoration program is well-funded and operationally capable of helping peaceable, well-intentioned people to comply with Federal and state laws. But as of right now, FixNICS does NONE of the above that would actually benefit law-abiding Americans. And instead of pushing pro-gun legislation that would restore the Second Amendment rights of Americans, Congressional leadership is dead set on infringing upon our rights. Please vote "NO" on H.R.4909 and DO NOT amend in FixNICS language!
