Stop Sexually Graphic and Porn-Themed Video Games
I am writing to express our dismay concerning the sexually exploitive games currently hosted on the Steam® platform. Steam offers entire categories of “nudity” and “sexual content” video games. These categories include over 780 video games with explicit content, featuring only mild warnings that such material “may not be appropriate for all ages, or for work.” These games, for example House Party, Men of Yoshiwara: Ohgiya, Super Star, Porno Studio Tycoon and more, promote the dangerous misconception that sexually exploiting others is harmless and fun. In addition to this, the age verification system for these games is dismally lacking, often only requiring users to click “View Page” after reading a short warning, or at most to enter their birth date with no other form of verification to protect children under 18 years old. With just a simple click, minors can easily access even the most egregious games, such as House Party which has themes of blackmailing and intoxicating women in order to coerce them into sex. I have three requests: 1. Please remove the game House Party due to its singularly degrading and exploitive themes. 2. Please also create an 18+ category on your website where all games with any amount of nudity or sexual content are stored. All accounts should have this 18+ category disabled by default, and require an extensive opt-in to view it (beyond simple button-clicking, for example, you could create an opt-in requirement that uses the credit card number and makes a notification to the credit card holder that the child has entered an 18+ segment of the website) so that children are no longer automatically exposed to this content. 3. Finally, please publicly commit to a more robust policy enforcement against selling games that normalize or glamorize sexual exploitation in the future, no matter the age of the user. If Steam goes forward with these improvements, you could become one of the safest online gaming platforms on the market, which would bring you much more business! Thank you.
