Please support Southeast Alaska Salmon
I am writing today to ask you to continue your leadership for the people of Alaska, fighting for the protection of our transboundary rivers, and to ask Secretary of Commerce Ross to do the same. A recently submitted Pelly Petition by Earthjustice representing Alaska Native and conservation groups requests that Secretary Ross consider action under the 1971 Pelly Amendment to the Fishermen’s Protective Act. We are asking that Secretary Ross conduct an investigation into the impact that six mines on our transboundary rivers could have on our salmon and communities here in Southeast Alaska. Alongside this, we ask for a renewed effort by the federal government in referring this issue to the International Joint Commission (IJC). Federal involvement is required to protect our transboundary rivers and the economy and jobs they support from pollution from this development. We ask that while an IJC referral is being considered, Secretary Ross conduct an investigation and, if findings warrant, make a recommendation to the President for trade sanctions against Canada These salmon rivers are essential to our economy and way of life in Southeast Alaska. Your previous call for federal involvement, in this case, showed your support for the Alaskan people and we ask that you show this again, advising Secretary Ross and others in the federal government to take action. In this time of economic uncertainty here in Alaska, I greatly appreciate your efforts to protect our salmon-based economy and way of life, prioritizing the people of Alaska over foreign mining interests. Thank you for your continued support in this matter.
