Please Support SB 719: Extreme Risk Protection Orders
I am writing to urge you to ensure the Oregon Legislature takes action this year to reduce gun violence. Two important pieces of legislation, SB 719 to would establish an Extreme Risk Protection Order and SB 1065 to close the Charleston Loophole, are broadly supported and awaiting action. Please make sure these bills are receive a vote before the end of this year's session. Senate Bill 719 would creates a judicial process to seek a protective order temporarily removing firearms from someone who through clear and convincing evidence has shown themselves to be a danger to themselves or others. It will help us reduce suicide in Oregon and help people get the care they need. It passed the Oregon Senate on a bipartisan basis and is currently in the House Rules Committee. Please do your part to help ensure this bill becomes law. Senate Bill 1065 would close the Charleston Loophole, which let's an individual take possession of a gun they've bought even before a background check is completed. Under current law, the dealer can release the weapon after three business days even if the Oregon State Police have not completed the background check. Delays in checks can occur when records have to be obtained from out of state. Please make sure this important legislation does not get lost in the final days of the session. Oregon now exceeds the national average when it comes to gun deaths. You have an opportunity to enact important policies that will have a significant impact on reducing gun violence and making our communities safer. Please support SB 719 and SB 1065.
