Pass the Personal Care Products Safety Act! SAMPLE LETTER

I am writing to ask you to co-sponsor S.1014, the Personal Care Products Safety Act. 
This bill, initially presented to the Senate  by Senator Dianne Feinstein, would take a powerful step in ensuring that our cosmetics are safe.This is an important bill that will protect consumers from undue and unknown health risks. I would like to see this bill become law and  as your constituent, I encourage you to make sure that it gets a vote on the Senate floor. 
 
The average woman uses 12 beauty products a day accounting for an average of 168 ingredients. The average man uses 6 products a day accounting for 85 ingredients. As I understand it, the FDA currently has virtually no ability to regulate the chemicals that go into these products. It concerns me greatly that the EU has banned about 1,400 ingredients from cosmetics, yet in our country we have only banned 11. 

The Food Drug and Cosmetic Act was drafted in 1938 and since then there have been no changes in the regulation of cosmetics. In the last 78 years we have seen amazing advancements in science and cosmetic technology but our laws are too antiquated to keep consumers safe from potentially harmful chemicals that could be on the market. In fact, not only I am concerned about the dangers of the chemicals about which we have safety data, given the current way that these chemicals are regulated and tested, I am concerned that there are unknown dangers in our cosmetics as well. 

I am part of a growing community of people in the hospitality, fitness and wellness industries who are concerned with America’s poor health.I encourage you to co-sponsor S.1014, the Personal Care Products Safety Act and see that it makes it to committee and then makes it to the Senate floor for a vote. The cosmetic industry and the health of our country could be improved by this bill.
