Veto the Port Ambrose Liquified Natural Gas Project

Dear Governor Cuomo,

RE: Docket number USCG-2013-0363

I am writing today to urge you to say no to the Liberty Natural Gas Port Ambrose Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Project.

New York State is at a critical juncture where we can move forward developing clean, safe, abundant, renewable energy such as the Long Island – New york City Off Shore Wind Project, or we can stay shackled to our dangerous fossil fuel past embodied by Port Ambrose. We applaud you for saying no to fracking and moving New York State (NYS) in the right direction. We must continue on that path and say no to Port Ambrose.

Instead of investing hundreds of millions of dollars in another LNG infrastructure project, which carries significant risks to environmental and human health and safety, we should be investing that money in the cleaner, safer wind farm proposed for the same location. Every day and every dollar we put into fossil fuel infrastructure is another day and another dollar that could be better invested in improving our renewable energy system; creating thousands of safe, permanent jobs; and making New York the national leader in clean, safe energy.

Natural gas is not a cleaner, safer, alternative energy source.  The Port Ambrose DEIS ignores a growing body of peer reviewed science showing that gas production, from drillpad to market is much more polluting than once believed. Many of these same studies were cited by then Acting Commissioner of Health for NYS, Dr. Zucker, when he explained the NYS fracking ban.

LNG also has a carbon footprint 40% larger than domestic shale gas, which is already as much as 120 times more potent a greenhouse gas than carbon. LNG would exacerbate climate change, and the coastal communities located closest to Port Ambrose would bear the brunt of those impacts. Here in New York State, and especially in the communities closest to the Port Ambrose proposed construction site, we have dealt first-hand with the direct affects of climate change.

Off shore wind, on the other hand, would contribute to those same coastal communities' resiliency, from job creation to protection from hurricanes. As Mark Z. Jacobson of Stanford University found, wind turbines can reduce peak wind speeds at landfall by up to 98 mph as well as decrease storm surge by up to 79 percent.

For these and many other reasons, and for the immediate and long-term economic and environmental interests of all New Yorkers, I implore you to veto the Port Ambrose Liquefied Natural Gas Project.
