Stop Massive Infrastructure Buildout
Dear Senator Schumer and Senator Gillibrand, New York State now faces an onslaught of natural gas infrastructure projects that threaten our communities and environment in many ways. The Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co., a subsidiary of Kinder Morgan, is proposing to build a gas pipeline that would go up through Susquehanna County in Pennsylvania, parallel to the proposed Constitution pipeline in New York, and into Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. Kinder Morgan is the same company whose other infrastructure projects have been plagued by leaks and explosions, including two large and dangerous spills in residential neighborhoods in Canada. The Northeast Energy Direct Pipeline could cause severe environmental impacts including negative impacts on drinking water supplies. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has a history of not doing its job. In the past it has failed to consider the environmental consequences of the development of pipelines, failed to evaluate pipeline’s air quality impacts, failed to evaluate pipeline’s impact on greenhouse gas emissions, and failed to adequately consider cumulative impact. This project is not in the interest of New Yorkers, it is in the interest of corporate profits. We urge you to use your influence over the FERC to keep this project from moving forward. This is the wrong time to be building out a massive fossil fuel infrastructure. We should be weaning off fossil fuels and prioritizing clean, green, sustainable energy policies. Thank you for your consideration.
